In between weeding, cleaning, lounging, vacuum breakdowns and marathon book sessions during my week off, I had a nice surprise:  Nichole ventured North to spend a little quality time with her Mom and Pops.

Isn’t she just a cutie?

We always have fun when she comes up.  Lots of late night bull-sessions, talking about everything and anything.

We also tried out a couple of recipes that I wanted to make, but us womenfolk can only stay in the kitchen so long.

So I decided to take her to the college farm and show off all the good things that were going on around there.

The farm manager, Todd, was sweating his backside off when we arrived so he decided to take a break and give us a mini-tour.

IMG_4858.1

Which I just knew would start with his pride and joy.  He started raising chickens a couple years ago and has really increased the size and diversity (there are even 4 ducks, which I just love).

IMG_4856.1

It just so happened that we got to meet the new arrivals.

IMG_4850.1

These little turkeys love this guy!

IMG_4855.1

And Nichole even got to pet one!

We also got a tour of all the new hoop houses and blueberry plants that he put in this year.  The farm also received some ancient squash plants that are doing very well.

As opposed to mine, which are growing very slowly.  (I’ve never seen a foot photobomb before, have you?)

But, there’s still a couple months of summer left, so I’m hoping for the best!

I took last week off for some well deserved R&R.  I was busy, lazy, busy, lazy…

Let’s just say it was a vicious cycle.

There were some very productive sessions that needed to be balanced with sloth-like intermissions, and I took full advantage of both.  My philosophy is “What I didn’t get done didn’t need to be done.”  But some things really did need to get done but I’m not going to worry about it because when the next great energy burst hits me I’ll tackle them.

Probably.

What did get done was some major work on the studio.

IMG_4775.1

We have floor!!!

IMG_4776.1

And more trim work!!!

IMG_4767.1

And we got the pellet stove out of the attic!!!

IMG_4768.1

Well, first it got stuck.

And Rick got mad at it and started taking it apart to fit through the *!@%# hole.

IMG_4780.1

Thank goodness Willard was there to help, because that thing was heavy!!

Now we’re just waiting on the electrician and HVAC dude to come and do their stuff.  So while we’re waiting, Rick gave me the green light to start moving stuff in.

IMG_4861.1

Which I promptly did.

I had to hold back a little since things will have to be moved for the electrician and some minor trim work, but once that’s done I’ll be a crazy woman!

OK, crazier.

Since the inside is 98 percent complete, Rick has moved to the exterior to get it ready for siding.

IMG_4859.1

As usual, lots of prep work needs to be done before the fun begins.

I’m not sure Rick would use the word “fun,” but I’m trying to keep a positive spin on things.

I am happy to announce that we now have trim in the studio!

A couple years ago Rick & I procured some wood from an auction that was pretty unique, and try as we might to keep it from getting wet until we could find a use for it, we failed miserably.

IMG_4679.1

After 2 years of getting poured on with rain, dumped on with snow and sweltering in the heat of the amazonian summers of the Northwoods, it had started to grow moss and other… things on it’s surface.

But not wanting it to go to waist, we pulled a few pieces out and set them up on sawhorses to dry and then I sprayed the crap out of them with bleach.  Straight up, nothing added.  If that wasn’t going to kill whatever was growing on it, nothing would.

IMG_4676.1

Worked like a charm!  Unfortunately, it also “bleached” it a little, but I didn’t care.  It was perfect for what I wanted it to do, and that was trim the windows and door in the studio.

IMG_4678.1

Now here is why I love it so much.  See all those curves and gouges?  This is what Rick & I have dubbed “Wormwood.”  Little wormies and other creepy crawlies got under the bark of these trees and developed these little pathways to do… well, whatever it is that creepy crawlies do..

Here’s what we haven’t found out about it yet:  what kind of wood it is.  It has to be a type of hard wood because we went through 2 saw blades and countless times of blowing the fuse on the table saw cutting the stuff.

IMG_4743.1

Now tell me that isn’t just downright sexy around those windows!

IMG_4744.1

It adds a whole new layer of design to the building.  I like using lots of different types of wood… everyone gets to jump in the pool!

IMG_4742.1

It also played a roll as trim on the outer walls as well as the ceiling under the loft (pictures of that in a future post).

In addition to the windows we also got the door decked out in this marvelous stuff, put in baseboards, installed the ceiling under the loft and put in the flooring.

Phew!

Now we are going to wait for the electrician to show up and finish the writing and get the lights hooked up, get our HVAC guy over to hook up the stove, and start tackling the outside.

So in the meantime, I’ve begun moving items in so I can use the space for what it was built for:  making my jewelry.

And that will happen as soon as I quit doing my happy dance.

It was a typical Monday that I had off from work and I was going through my mental checklist of things that I wanted to accomplish.

As I walked through the kitchen I glanced at the cookie jar and immediately stopped.  Were there any cookies left?  If so, was it enough to make it through the week?

In our house, there always has to be something sweet around.  Sure, there was ice cream in the freezer that hasn’t been touched but that didn’t count.

Thinking that Rick needs some variety in his life besides me and chocolate chip cookies, I headed to the computer and started going through some of my “saved sites” looking for something different to make.

After 15 minutes of browsing and drooling, I abandoned the web and picked up a stack of Mom’s recipes that were sitting next to the computer.

More drooling ensued as I leafed through them, and finally stopped on one that I wasn’t sure I’d had before.  It looked nummy, and the few ingredients that it consisted of I surprisingly had all of them.

Magic Cookie Bars

IMG_4755.1

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (6 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 (3 1/2 ounce) can flaked coconut (1 1/2 cups)*
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees (325 degrees for glass dish).

In 13 x 9 inch baking pan, melt margarine (or butter) in oven.  Sprinkle crumbs over margarine/butter;  mix together and press into pan.

IMG_4697.1

Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumbs.

IMG_4702.1

Top evenly with remaining ingredients;  press down firmly.

IMG_4720.1

Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned.  Cook thoroughly before cutting.

Store loosely covered at room temperature.

How simple is that?  This is a one-pan recipe which you do not have to dirty 14 bowls and 8 measuring cups to pull together.  Bonus points for only have 6 ingredients!!

The hardest part about these bars will be getting them to last a week.

*Naturally I didn’t have canned coconut, so I just used the bagged stuff and put on the amount I wanted.

Holy cats have things been going fast and furious on the studio building.  With Rick’s talents and my imagination that building is really looking special.

Weekend before last was dedicated to getting some stairs put in.  Since there is limited space as to where to put them and what type to have, I had to get on the interwebs and find ideas that would suit our needs.

I showed Rick a fairly simple design that I had total faith that he could create, and of course he came through like the Knight in Shining Armor that he is.

IMG_4637.1

Using materials that were just hanging around the garage doing nothing worth bragging about Rick quickly had the risers cut (I think that’s what they’re called) and started routering out the notches for the steps.

IMG_4640.1

I had no idea of how this was going to come together and I didn’t for one minute doubt that the man knew what he was doing, so I left him alone to putz on other mindless weekend stuff so I wouldn’t interrupt him.

IMG_4641.1

No thumbs were beaten with hammers during this process.

IMG_4644.1

Many hours later we had… stairs!

I think people 6 miles away heard me scream with delight!

Are they fancy?  No.

Are they functional?  Yes.

 IMG_4651.1

Are they exactly what I wanted?  Hell yes!!

Thinking that since he’s spent most of the day on that one project, he’d put everything away and call it a day.

Ummm… notsomuch.

IMG_4650.1

Apparently the man was on a mission, because before I knew it he had the railing all cut and put together for the loft.

We hauled that bad boy into the building, trudged up our respectable stairs/ladder and secured it in place.

IMG_4652.1

I took a step back and grinned ear to ear.  If you though I was excited when the framing went up last fall, that was nothing compared to what I was feeling at that moment.

IMG_4654.1

Have I mentioned how much I love this man?
