Confession time: I didn’t spoil birds as much until we moved to the Northwoods.
There, I said it. I feel much better now.
So why would I ruin any potential thought that you might have that I was a card carrying bird lover (which I am) (without the card) by getting that out in the open?
Well, because I have a predicament that I’m hoping one or more of you may be able to help me with. You see, we have been blessed with finches. A month ago they descended on my feeders and I absolutely love them. Sure, I’ve had them around in my life before, and they’ve always had a special place in my heart. Maybe it’s the wonderful color that they bring in an otherwise bleak winter. Or the fact that one used to perch on my granddaughter’s windowsill (which I thought was absolutely adorable).
Whatever the reason, they make me smile and I enjoy having them around.
So what’s the big whoha?
You see that beautiful feeder (a present from my brother for Christmas… thanks bro!) filled with nettle seed? Well, for some reason, they are grabbing out the nettle and throwing it on the ground. And leaving it there! That stuff is expensive dude! Why would they be doing such a thing?
I’m completely baffled. They still go after the sunflower seeds, but they are supposed to like nettle! Is it a seasonal thing, like only sunflower seeds in the winter and nettle in the summer? Have I run into a group of highly sophisticated finches that will only eat the imported stuff from France? Is the ambiance not to their liking?
WHAT’S THE DEAL???
Please, please, tell me what I am doing wrong, because I really don’t want to be wasting money on something that is going to be thrown by the wayside.
Oh, and is it awful of me to be happy that the squirrels aren’t eating it?
Because I’m totally OK with that.

I’m just as baffled that YOUR finches are still yellow! Our finches turn brown in the winter!
We have some that are brown too. Maybe it was the warmer weather we had that brought out the yellow 😉
