This is the first year that I have bought a hummingbird feeder. I just never wanted to deal with the ants that always seemed to be attracted to them. (And I’ve got enough trouble with them in my house the way it is.)
Most people attach them to the side of their house, you know, to get a great view of the little critters. That’s all fine and dandy, but because of the aforementioned ants, I prefer to locate it a safe distance away, and still get to see them coming and going.
So I put it up where the winter bird feeder goes, a straight shot out my bedroom window where I can watch it when I’m on the computer.
And they have found me.
Well, once I cleaned out all the dead ants that were floating in it, they really started coming around.
It was pretty icky. I wouldn’t have wanted it either, so I don’t blame them a bit for going to a finer establishment for a while.
Do you know how hard it is to get a picture of these little things? They’re quick!
I actually have one that is camera shy, because as soon as I step out the door (and I’m super stealth quiet), he flies away.
Oh, and those little yellow flower-type thingies that they put over the holes to try to fool the birds into thinking that they are actually at a flower?
Yeah, they’re stupid, and the birds aren’t falling for them. Well, mine at least, because those suckers were gone within a week. No, not by me, but either the squirrels knocked them out when they discovered they couldn’t infiltrate the feeder, or the hummingbirds tossed them aside.
I’ve got smart hummingbirds in my neck of the woods.

Awesome, Mom! And what pretty, smart hummingbirdies!
Hummingbirds are very pretty! And quick, you should see them flit around the feeder…lol
We only accept the smart hummingbirdies at our house.
Check that… we will accept any hummingbirdies because we love them so much.
Equal opportunity and all that, ya know 😉
I love the different colors!
