Now that the “S” is all gone, we can finally get the full impact of something that happened last fall that could have been quite devastating.

Generally I’m not a very sound sleeper.  Since I’ve gained the supersonic hearing of a Mommy years ago, I can usually be woken up pretty easily.  I’m not sure what happened, but for some reason I was sawing logs pretty good on this particular night in November when my husband came into the bedroom after midnight and told me that the woods were on fire.

At first it didn’t register and I rolled back over, thinking that I was dreaming.

I wish.

It took a few seconds for his words to sink in, and I got out of bed and went to see what he was talking about.  Oh. My. Gawd.  I was not prepared for what I saw next.  I stepped out onto the back porch and saw the woods behind our house completely ablaze.  Rick had already called the fire department, which was only a couple blocks away, but we couldn’t wait for them.  The wind was starting to whip the fire closer to our house, and if it got to the woodpile, which is only about 20 feet from the house, it would have been tough to stop it.

Of course all of the water hoses had been put away anticipating the snow that was supposed to arrive that night, so he had to run to the shed on the far side of the property and grab one and try to keep the flames back as best he could until the fire department arrived, which was about 5 minutes later.

It took them a good 1/2 hour to get everything under control and make sure that there were no more signs of burning.  They were top notch!

This is what I see now when I look out the kitchen window.

This is how close it got to the wood pile.

Here is scary reality people.

I did not see this until yesterday.  This one log had already started on fire when they put it out, and there is a charred branch laying right against it.

If my husband wasn’t a night owl, I don’t even want to think about what would have happened.

Once again, there was someone looking out for us, saving us from something that could have been very, very bad.  And I give my thanks every day for that.

This was one of my fears when we moved to the area.  And the drought that we have been suffering through for the past 4 years didn’t help the situation.

Oh, and the snow they had predicted for that night?  It started as the firemen were packing up the hoses.

Go figure.
