I awoke Sunday morning to find that we actually got what the forecasters were predicting:

Snow.  4 inches of the white stuff.  (Do not adjust your screen, it really was that dark and dismal out.)

One thing that I really love about snow in the Northwoods is the beautiful picture it paints on trees, especially the pines that we have dotting the homestead.

Those millions of snowflakes weave their way amongst the needles and give them a great big hug!

And as we (those of us that are familiar with snow) know, with the wonderful blanket of snow on the trees and lawns, there is also snow on the roads.  And, people up in these here parts have to learn how to drive all over again in the slippery stuff.

Yours truly is no exception, as I reminded myself as I traveled the hour to the dentist this morning to relinquish my top dentures for their final fitting.

Let’s just say the ride was… interesting.  Not exactly white-knuckle scary, but takeitslowandwatchforicyspots type of conditions.

I am happy to say the trip was uneventful, and I will be making it again on Wednesday to welcome my newly fitted teeth back to their proper place in my mouth.

Which will be followed by tearing into any solid food I can get my hands on.

And as the motto goes, “Always be prepared.”

So that’s what I’ve been trying to do before Monday, when I head to the dentist and relinquish my top dentures for 3 days for their final fitting.

When oldest daughter paid a visit last weekend, she brought all the fixins for Potato Cheese Soup.

Can you tell she’s used this recipe a few times?

It’s rich and delicious, and I’ve been hording the quart in my fridge knowing that it’s going to be just the ticket to sustain me for those 3 days.  Well, along with other non-chewable foods like ice cream, pudding and vanilla wafers (you’d be amazed at how well they dissolve in your mouth!).

Along with the food planning, I’ve also scheduled to take those 3 days off of work, because I don’t think people really want to see me without my teeth (it’s not a pretty sight, plus I talk funny).

I’m also going to take the time to watch the 3rd installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  Please try to contain your shock as I do realize that I am the only person left on the planet who has not seen it.

I’m also, ALSO going to be making more jewelry.  My next shipment of gemstones will be delivered next week, and I can’t wait to play with all the pretty rocks and shiny silver I’ve got coming.

I’m also, ALSO, ALSO going to get the house cleaned and ready for our Thanksgiving get-together next Saturday.

Maybe I’ll find time to rest and relax too.  I’ll see if I can fit that into my schedule.

Because right now I am completely and utterly stuffed.  Filled to the gills.  Canteatnomorethankyouverymuch full.

We held our annual Feast of Thanksgiving today at the college.  This is an event where we honor our elders with food and gifts, as well as our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all that they are and do for us.

Faculty and staff all donate gifts that will be given to these wonderful men and women after they are treated to the biggest buffet you have ever seen.  And by big, I mean roughly the size of Texas, and that doesn’t even include the 4,967 desserts that they can choose from (if they have room for more, which never seems to be a problem).

So if you don’t see me for a couple days, I’ll be sleeping off a food coma.

But if you do happen to find me walking around deliriously and speaking gibberish, just gently guild me back to my home.  It just means I had one desert too many and am working off my sugar high from the homemade cheesecake I just had to have because my eyes were bigger than my stomach.

Uffda!

Well, we’ve been spoiled too long, and after last night, it all ended.

While I knew it was inevitable, I still liked my state of denial when it came to the cold and snow that we would soon be experiencing.

It is November after all.  And the first half of the month with temps in the 40’s, 50’s and even a few 60’s have been bliss!

But no more.

Today ushers in temps in the 30’s for highs, and it looks like it will only go downhill from there for a while.

And “a while” up here in the northwoods is anywhere up to 5 months.

Maybe I’ll be like the bears and hibernate until April.  I could just climb into my nice warm bed with the electric blanket cranked all the way up and heavy comforters layered on top of that.  Mmmmm…. that sounds nice.

Unfortunately, I’d still have to get up to eat, feed the cats, use the “facilities,” stoke the woodburner, wash clothes, clean the house, cook, take out the garbage, blah, blah, blah.

Sometimes I envy the bears.  They get to sleep through all that.

And they don’t have to do laundry.
